For many microphones the following applies: the closer the distance between the sound source and the microphone, the more low frequencies are amplified (at the expense of the high frequencies). Your voice or instrument will sound fuller if you sing, speak or play closer to the microphone. This is the proximity effect. There is also such a thing as the range of a microphone.
